Learn how to use a wool and cashmere care kit to gently wash, dewrinkle, and depill your fine knits at home. Step-by-step instructions for machine or hand washing.

Quick answer

Use a wool and cashmere care kit to gently wash, dewrinkle, and depill your fine knits at home. The kit includes a specialized detergent, a dewrinkling spray, and a fabric comb to keep sweaters looking like new.

Why a care kit beats dry cleaning

Dry cleaning uses harsh chemicals that can strip natural oils from wool and cashmere fibers, leading to dryness and brittleness over time. A dedicated care kit lets you clean your knits at home with a gentle, cold-water detergent that preserves the fabric's softness and shape.

The Wool & Cashmere Care Kit from The Laundress includes everything you need for a complete at-home care routine. It's designed for both hand washing and machine washing on a delicate cycle, so you can choose the method that works best for you.

What's inside the kit

The kit contains three full-size products: a Wool & Cashmere Shampoo for gentle cleansing, a Crease Release spray for removing wrinkles without ironing, and a Fabric Comb for removing pills and fuzz. Together, they cover washing, freshening, and finishing.

How to use your wool and cashmere care kit

  1. Step 1: Check the care label and test first: Always check the garment's care label. Most wool and cashmere can be hand or machine washed on a delicate cycle, but some items may be labeled dry clean only. Before using the shampoo, test it on a small, hidden area to ensure colorfastness. If the label says dry clean only, you can still try the gentle method, but test first.
  2. Step 2: Wash with Wool & Cashmere Shampoo: Fill a sink or basin with cold water and add a small amount of the shampoo (about 2 capfuls per sweater). Submerge the garment, gently agitate with your hands, and let it soak for 10–15 minutes. For machine washing, place the sweater in a mesh bag and use the delicate cycle with cold water. Do not wring or twist the fabric. Common mistake: using hot water or too much detergent can cause shrinkage and residue.
  3. Step 3: Rinse and remove excess water: Drain the soapy water and refill the basin with clean cold water. Gently press the sweater to push out the detergent, then repeat until no suds remain. To remove excess water, roll the sweater in a clean towel and press firmly. Do not wring or hang wet knits, as this can stretch them out of shape. Lay the sweater flat on a drying rack away from direct heat or sunlight.
  4. Step 4: Dewrinkle with Crease Release: Once the sweater is dry, lightly mist the Crease Release spray over any wrinkles or creases. Gently tug the fabric to smooth it out. This works especially well on collars, cuffs, and hems. No ironing needed. Avoid oversaturating the fabric; a light mist is enough.
  5. Step 5: Depill with the Fabric Comb: Lay the sweater flat on a table. Hold the fabric taut with one hand and gently run the comb over any pills or fuzz balls in short, light strokes. Work in one direction to avoid damaging the fibers. Empty the comb's collection chamber as needed. Too much pressure can create holes; use gentle, consistent strokes.
